I actually jokingly posted this article "FBI says North Korea deployed thousands of IT workers to get remote jobs in US with fake IDs" on my profile years ago before the FBI discovered the North Koreans engaging in this practice.
Upon further thought, it seems like an interesting idea, and it's not necessarily illegal. Many corporations subcontract work, so in theory, Americans could apply for a job and then subcontract the work out. In most cases, this would be completely legal. In fact, I'm currently doing something similar with my embassy contracts, where I won the contract and then subcontracted the work. It's a common practice among corporations, as long as it's done within the bounds of the law. The only illegal aspect is how the North Koreans were carrying out their operations.
