Language & Communication

The official language of Vietnam is Vietnamese. While traveling in Vietnam, it is helpful to have some basic knowledge of commonly used phrases and expressions in Vietnamese. Here are a few key phrases that can come in handy:
  • Hello: Xin chao (sin chow)
  • Thank you: Cam on (kahm un)
  • Goodbye: Tam biet (tahm byet)
  • Yes: Vang (vung)
  • No: Khong (kh-uhng)
  • Excuse me: Xin loi (sin loy)
  • Do you speak English?: Ban co noi tieng Anh khong? (bahn koh noy tyeng ahn kh-uhng?)
English is spoken and understood in major tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants. However, in more remote areas, the level of English proficiency may be limited. It is advisable to learn a few basic Vietnamese phrases or carry a phrasebook or translation app to facilitate communication.

Weather & Climate

Vietnam has a diverse climate due to its elongated shape and varying topography. The country can be divided into three main regions, each with its own weather patterns:
  1. Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa): Northern Vietnam experiences four distinct seasons. Summers (May to August) are hot and humid, while winters (December to February) can be chilly. Spring (March to April) and autumn (September to November) offer pleasant temperatures.

  3. Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta): Southern Vietnam has a tropical climate with high humidity all year round. It experiences two seasons: the dry season (December to April) and the wet season (May to November). The temperature remains relatively constant, with warm and humid conditions prevailing.

Local Customs & Etiquette

Here are some important aspects to keep in mind:
  • Greetings: When meeting someone, it is customary to greet with a slight bow and a handshake. Address older individuals or those in positions of authority with respect.
  • Dress Code: When visiting religious sites or more conservative areas, it is advisable to dress modestly. Cover your shoulders and knees, and avoid wearing revealing clothing.
  • Removing Shoes: It is customary to remove your shoes before entering someone's home, temples, or pagodas. Look for cues or shoe racks at the entrance.
  • Dining Etiquette: When dining with Vietnamese hosts, wait for the eldest or the host to start eating before you begin.
